Fold. Feel. Discover Symmetry.

SymSym is an inclusive tactile symmetry learning kit that helps children—including blind and low-vision learners—understand the mathematical ideas of symmetry, lines of symmetry and asymmetry through hands-on folding, touch and shape-based activities. Instead of only looking at pictures in a textbook, learners can feel a shape, locate its possible line of symmetry, fold it and compare how the two parts fit together.

This DIY inclusive STEAM educational kit includes pre-cut paper shapes grouped into basic and complex activities, with examples featuring one, two, more than two or no lines of symmetry. It offers an engaging approach to geometry, mathematical reasoning and accessible classroom exploration for students with visual impairments as well as sighted peers.

What Can Children Learn with SymSym?

1. Understand Lines of Symmetry Through Touch

Explore the idea that a line of symmetry divides a shape into two matching halves. Learners can follow a tactile crease or marked folding guide, fold the paper along that line and feel whether the edges align.

2. Compare Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Shapes

Some shapes can be folded into matching halves; others cannot. By checking how the two sides meet, learners can distinguish symmetrical shapes from asymmetrical shapes through physical evidence rather than relying on a visual diagram alone.

3. Discover One, Two and Multiple Lines of Symmetry

Different shapes offer different numbers of possible folding lines. Children can compare examples with one line, two lines, more than two lines or no line of symmetry, and explore how the result changes when they fold in another direction.

4. Explore Basic and Complex Geometry

Start with familiar shapes and progress to more detailed or irregular figures. SymSym provides activities involving circles, squares, triangles, other polygons, everyday object outlines and complex geometric shapes to develop understanding step by step.

5. Explore Symmetry in Faces

The kit also includes two face-mask activities intended for exploring facial symmetry and relating mathematical ideas to familiar objects.

Why Choose the SymSym Tactile Geometry Kit?

  • Touch-first learning: Explore the position and shape of a fold by touch rather than depending entirely on sight.
  • Physical folding activities: Test mathematical ideas by folding pieces and comparing the two sides.
  • Progressive difficulty: Activities include both basic and complex shapes for continued exploration.
  • Symmetry and asymmetry together: Learn why some objects have matching halves and others do not.
  • Inclusive STEAM resource: Useful in mathematics, geometry, special education and mixed-ability classrooms.
  • Organised activity groups: The paper shapes are supplied in labelled pouches grouped by symmetry concept.
  • Guided lesson plan: The original box includes a QR code for downloading SymSym lesson-plan activities.

How to Use SymSym

  1. Find the tactile crease: Run your fingers over a pre-cut shape and locate a tactile mark or crease line representing a possible line of symmetry.
  2. Fold and feel: Fold the paper along the crease. If the edges match, the fold represents a line of symmetry; if they do not, that fold does not divide the shape into matching halves.
  3. Explore other folds: Rotate the shape and try other folding directions to discover additional lines of symmetry.
  4. Compare different groups: Move between basic, complex and asymmetrical shapes and discuss why some figures have one, two, several or no lines of symmetry.
  5. Try the face masks: Explore the provided face shapes and discuss the idea of reflection symmetry in familiar forms.

Developed with Inclusive Learning in Mind

SymSym is an educational resource developed to make an abstract school concept more concrete and explorable. The packaging credits the National Centre for Assistive Health Technologies (NCAHT), IIT Delhi and Saksham for design and development, and identifies the Raised Lines Foundation for manufacturing and dissemination, with supporting partners acknowledged on the box.

From recognising a line to feeling two matching halves, SymSym helps turn geometry into a hands-on learning experience.

Note: This is a physical paper-based educational kit rather than an electronic device or Braille textbook. Learners may benefit from guidance by a teacher or caregiver when introducing a new activity.
